New Requirements for Alberta Doulas

Are you planning to give birth in an Alberta hospital? Are you planning to hire a doula for support?  We thought you should know the new requirements for doulas in hospitals.

  1. First, you should have a conversation with your care provider and let them know that you have hired a doula to support you throughout your labor.  Your care provider can then write this information on your prenatal records.
  2. Next, you should alert the hospital you are birthing at that you will be having a doula present throughout your labor.  You should call them close to your estimated due date so they can note that you will be having a doula present and they can let the labor and delivery unit know that they have approved this person.
  3. You should let both your care provider and the hospital know that your doula is certified (we are both certified through DONA and the Matrona.  Brenda is also certified through Stillbirthday).
  4. You should let both your care provider and the hospital know that your doula is doubly vaccinated against COVID-19 (we are both doubly vaccinated).  This is a requirement for us to enter the hospital.

Once you have done all of these things, when we meet you at the hospital, we will bring our vaccine passport, our certification documents and we will wear appropriate PPE (including safety glasses).

We look forward to serving all of your birth needs in the coming future!
